Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I don't know what Abramovich was thinking about sacking Di Matteo after last's night defeat to Juve :O. I thought he did a good job at Chelsea what with bringing the only thing they've always wanted............................. A STRIKER WHO COSTS £50m AND FLOPS :D (only joking Chelsea fans) but seriously the Champions League but they can still get into the knockout stages surely. This is a big shock in the football world imo.

Always on the cards. They had their hands tied in actually giving him the contract in the first place on the basis he won the CL.

Let's speculate about his follow-up ...

Mourinho back?

I had a feeling this was coming, but really hoped I was wrong.
Winning the FA cup and the Champions League as well as starting this season with seven wins in eight games in the league really is not good enough for Chelsea...

I think even Scolari got more time he was a complete fiasco.

What mos said. I'm mostly repeating it in saying that to me as well it's no shock. He was only supposed to be a caretaker but he threw a spanner in the works by being in charge when they won the CL.

I'd be stunned if Guardiola goes. I'd be surprised if Mourinho considers it. It's poison. You had the experienced and popular Ranieri given short-shrift. Mourinho comes in, probably the finest coach/manager of modern times, but he's out to be replaced by puppet Avram Grant (a man with zero right to be appointed to such a job). Grant gets less than a year and he's out for Luis Felipe Scolari because Abramovich wants more attractive football and all. Scolari gets about 7 months in which to undo about 4 years of culture of conservative football. More people in as caretakers temporary. (Ray Wilkins for 1 game, Guus Hiddink to see out the season.) Then it's Carlo Ancelotti but he's Italian and what type of game does just about every Italian manager ever favour? Yep, back to fairly conservative style. And by now of course the team's aging. So Ancelotti isn't trusted with that, instead Andre Villas-Boas is brought in, at considerable expense. The bright young star of world football management, with the long-term remit, he gets 8 months. Cue another caretaker who stumbles into the permanent job (Di Matteo). A quick bit of absurd transfer dealing later and you've got 2 strikers, one who is a good backup and sub, might be a future starter (Sturridge) and one who is surely by now confirmed as a spent force (Torres). Got anyone else? Well Lukaka mate but let's send him out on loan. Yeah, what clubs ever need more than 2 strikers eh? Brendan Rogers told me it'd be a good idea.

So what manager would we even imagine Abramovich wants? Simple! (1) A winner, who'll (2) win with attractive attacking football and (3) reduce the average age of the side in all positions and (4) get it all together instantly. Or alternatively of course, he'll appoint his mate Avram Grant who can stand in front of the cameras looking dour and not speaking properly while Roman makes all the real decisions.

Rafa Benitez would be an unbelievable appointment. The fact Benitez seems to think he could walk into such a job is also unbelievable. Mourinho would be extremely surprising because I see no reason he should lower himself or risk the ever-present chance of being sacked on a whim. I don't see Guardiola wanting it. Guus Hiddink? He's long be a favourite. I can't see him going for Harry Redknapp. Do we think he'd necessarily rule out some sort of tandem or team, perhaps bringing Gus Poyet as part of it, with Ray Wilkins about and Avram Grant above them? Rijkaard?

I think my biggest fear, as a Dortmund fan, would be if he turns his eyes towards Jurgen Klopp, but I think Klopp would be too loyal to Dortmund, and too intelligent to swap a great project where he enjoys a lot of faith from his bosses for a large project you might be sacked from at any moment.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Apparently to save time, Roman Abramovic has already sacked his next Chelsea manager due to the fact he's unable to get the required four points per match and two Champions League titles per season!

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
Why doesnt Abramovic be the manager? Problem solved ! ;)

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

You mean "appoint Avram Grant" then... ;)

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

I could have applied for it but my doppleganger have been accepted as interim manager........ Rafa Benitez :P.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

I have a season ticket and I am stunned to my core by the whole thing. Even by Roman's standards of taking the gun and aiming at the foot this is remarkable. Robbie was a hero at Chelsea as a player, came back and went for glory and won the 2 biggest trophies he could. This season he lost Drogba, Terry and Lampard for long periods and but for some poor finishing and Mark "Manchester United" Clattenburg they would be top of the league. Basically we are a whisker from being the finished article, playing great football, the defense just needed a bit of tightening and a touch sharper in front of goal. Against Liverpool we should have been 4-0 up at half time. At WBA we were poor but still made enough chances to win. Against Man United until we were down to 9 men only one team was going to win. I actually left that game convinced that we would win the league.

What was missing, a ball winning midfielder.. why we let Essien (who is slowing) and Merieles go is a surprise, the later was still. Nando is lazy, plain and simple and needs to be replaced by anyone.

Sacking Robbie is a disgrace, and Benitez will drag us down as a club. Rafa hates Chelsea and it's fans and players and said enough during his time at Liverpool. As for Chelsea's managers, below are my opinions on the hirings and firings of Roman.

Ranieri... as we were getting Jose sacking him was correct, lovely guy but sadly not a winner. He built a great team and deserves great credit.

Mourinho.... I think he had enough of Roman and Sheva, gutting to lose him but I do not think he was too bothered. Roman cut the money off and it annoyed him. We should have done everything to keep him.

Grant... lost two league games and the Champions League on pens, very unlucky to miss out but not a winner.

Scolari... went to war with the players, some very poor performances

Hiddink... came, won the FA Cup, left on his own bat

Carlo... won the double, saw a load of good players leave, came second and got lumbered with Torres which messed everything up for us. Should have been allowed to manage the club correctly, a very good manager and good man. Mistake to lose him.

Andre... useless, worst manager I have ever seen at Chelsea, worse even than Ian Porterfield

Robbie... won the Champions League.... won the FA Cup... 4 points of the top of Prem when fired.... mistake to sack and replace with......

Benitez... every Chelsea fan's idea of the anti Christ.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

As whins said, Benitez is being reported everywhere, so seems a fact. What. The. *edited*. He hasn't worked in 2 years. He hasn't been successful in 7. He can point at his FA Cup and CL wins with Liverpool but let's no-one forget they were both won on penalties. If each coin flip had gone the other way he would've had 0 trophies to show for his 6 season reign. The less said about his work with Internazionale, having inherited a squad who won a treble with Mourinho, the better (for him).

I actually am neutral about Chelsea, maybe I even dislike them, but I dislike Benitez's over-inflated reputation and sense of his own abilities even more. He should be at a mid-table side somewhere trying to rebuild his reputation. He doesn't belong with Chelsea, interim or otherwise.

Don't forget the fact that Scolari didn't even know how to set up the training. When Hiddink came in, the first thing he had to do was change the training so that the players reached a high enough fitness level.
Quite laughable.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
Exactly, you need a manager that is up to date, Fergie stays on the pulse by having hungry young coaches around him. Benitez is a useless defensive manager.

Papers reporting that Robbie was fired for dropping Nando. The Spanish ponce has only played a couple of decent games in nearly 3 years.

I feel like I have gone to bed with Kelly Brook and woken up with Nora Batty

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Unlike any other CLUB in the world we have our own transfer market for coaches :)

I dont understand y do we buy injured and old players in the first place for important positions.
We bought Shev when he was 29-30 and Torrres when he was injured, thats the most stupidest thing to do.
Its always very difficult to make a comeback for a star players after a Big injury.
Expectations are high but your body is not the same anymore.

Pep is going to United or city, mourinho will only leave real if he wins CL this season. Mancini will be jobless and guess wat he gets.
Its a win win situation for Rafa an Abro.he need s a monkey till the end of the season n Rafa needs to revive his career,it cant get more luckier than this for him.

The problem is ppl around Abro have their eyes on his money and to backup theirs and Abros case are the Titles he has got for chelsea. Interim's have worked for chelsea.
he is under the illusion now that he is the best manager out there for the club.

Chelsea wldnt be wat it is now without him so we cant say much about his antic.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I don't think injury is the explanation. He's had a few little ones but he's never really had a huge one where he missed any big chunk of a season. His pace doesn't look too affected, nor his strength. I've never known any footballer lose their touch or technique because of injury. Which leads to wondering whether it's psychological, whether that's curable or whether, like many players before him, some primal/instinctive aspect has just gone. This goes back to his last season with Liverpool. I remember already thinking something was wrong before Chelsea signed him. That was the first signs of the range of "Smokescreens" of talking about "Get the right service", "Needs a few games to get up to speed", "Just needs confidence" and all that business.

I won't bother again to go into it myself but take a look sometime who he's scored against for Spain. 31 in 101 is pretty poor anyway considering how attacking they are and the service, but check out how many of those even were braces or hattricks against the likes of San Marino, New Zealand and Liechtenstein.

I guess Rafa is saying the magic words in that he was in charge of Liverpool when Torres was flying and is saying it's just a matter of confidence. Does this make him a confidence trickster?! Hoho. Abramovich might just have to accept at some point that all Torres has proven to be is an even more expensive link in the chain of failure: Mutu, Crespo, Kezman, Shevchenko, Torres. And he's going to have to follow them out.

Gutting for Roman no doubt but this stinks of folly, some desperate hope of getting Torres working again. Which isn't going to happen because he's done.

Just read a great comment on this subject.....

''Benitez replaces Di Matteo.......the man who masterminded the the 2nd luckiest CL win in history replaced by the man who masterminded the luckiest''....:D

i was told tonite, in pub gossip, that although chelsea have gone thru managers in this sacking process, they stil have won one more trophy than Man Utd, i was also told that by the year 2015, every household will have an ex chelseas manager on their christmas card list.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I have to mention something, Crespo was a bloody great player, we won the league with him. One of the best strikers I have ever seen, Torres is not fit to clean his boots.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I almost didn't put Crespo, because he was quality, but then I thought about how "failure" might be defined and I think overall the signing of Crespo was exactly that. £16.8m and he only contributed in 2 out of 5 seasons while Chelsea owned him, scored a fairly solid but certainly not spectacular 20 in 49 in the league, 25 in 73 overall, then left on a free. And he is another one where if you compare his record prior to joining Chelsea with during and after... there's distinct difference.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I saw it coming Chelseas formation and substitutions were getting predictable after a while and Chelsea do need another defender and striker who can finish. After seeing some of David Luiz performances at CB I think he should just think about moving to play striker.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
In the two seasons that Crespo played for Chelsea he was excellent. I think he was none to thrilled when his pregnant wife was held hostage at gun point in their home a few months after he got here.

*******************************************************

In today's event Rafa Benitez has, as every Chelsea fan knew he would, has turned us into a second rate long ball outfit... to get the most out of the lazy Torres. We should have one today, and under a proper manager we would have done.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
It's obvious he is only an interim solution, though I have got no idea why they would let Di matteo go given that scenario. If he is interim then let DiMatteo see out the season, Rafa will only disenchant the fans and play a poor quality of football that the players will soon get disenchanted with.

There seems to be thinking that Guardiola will come in next season but I think Guardiola will wait it out, take some more rest time and then take over from Sir Alex at Man utd in the future.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I'd be stunned if Guardiola takes it. He would be arriving in similar position as AVB; talented young coach, hotly pursued, whatever it takes to get him, long-term plans... And then look how much time and loyalty AVB received. I'm not going to defend his record, nor ignore that although successful and highly rated that success was over a very short space of time, but regardless. Someone in Guardiola's position right now could walk into any job. Man Utd, Internazionale, Juventus, AC Milan, PSG, back to Barca... about the only one there might be stumbling block with is Real Madrid. He could pretty much name his salary, although I don't think high pay is going to be any real priority to him, and any of those teams would be foolish not to give him time. So from his point of view, why risk it with Roman?

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I do not think Pep is stupid enough to come and work for Chelsea at the moment.

Anyway nearly a week in and still no apology from Benitez for his insulting comments about Chelsea fans a few years back. At Melwood, Liverpool's training ground they are on a plaque... so he should be able to remember them.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

what I have found interesting after last Sunday's Chelsea match is the distinct lack of public press/media criticism of the Cheslea fans for their treatment / reception of Rafa Benitez. As a Blackburn fan we were condemned as being disgraceful for trying to get rid of Steve Kean despite week after week, month after month of defeats, abysmal team performances / tactics and eventual relegation and yet the Chelsea fans start from game one and nothing...the media / press have always hated Rovers cos we dared to challenge the 'big clubs' and win the league. As always, whether it is referees or the media it is one rule for the 'big clubs' and one for the 'small clubs'!

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

You would think so, but this awful long ball, losing football is what Roman seems to want.

Absolute rubbish.

Di Matteo was a club legend as a player, and in his short time as a manager for bringing us the trophy we wanted.

Chelsea fans are slated for being fickle as the manager has changed over the years... and then slated for showing loyalty...

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Some gibberish pro Rafa stuff being written in the media as well as on here. He is a media darling hence the huge support he gets from the Times, whose chief football writer is an unashamed Liverpool and Rafa fan.

The team has looked slightly more solid in beating Leeds United (Championship), Aston Villa (a virtual youth team then beaten 4-0 at home by Spurs, proving how bad they really are) and a 1-0 win at Norwich. Finally a win at Sunderland.

While a little bit of credit can be given for the lack of goals conceded and the approach he is taking, do you really think it is enough to make Chelsea fans love him? The results are merely par, and yes I mean the 8-0 in that. We could have had 12 and Villa put in the worst performance of any team I have ever seen at Chelsea in 25 years or so of attending games.

Robbie was a legend of the club, as a manager he won the European Cup, beating Barcelona on the way, and beat Liverpool in the FA Cup.

I was at one of what I am sure are many Chelsea Christmas parties and Rafa Benitez was there and I had the chance to talk to him for 5 minutes. He is a nice man and he was asking fans what he had done to anger them so much. While I have long since lost any interest in booing him I did point out that when a manager runs down another sides fans "the flags comment" it goes beyond the norm. He certainly sticks to his guns and everyone will move on.

But do not buy into everything is great now Rafa is here, he is making a start with the team and I hope he can get us back in the title race, but he needs to go some to be liked.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

The main problem is the people around Roman giving him bad advice, bringing in Villas, sacking Carlo and letting Drog, Frank and Ash all leave is a nonsense.

Today's result,

Aston Villa 0 Wigan 3.

As I said, long way to go for Rafa to be compared to Robbie, Carlo or Jose.

Rafa's London derbies.

Chelsea 0 Fulham 0

West Ham 3 Chelsea 1

Chelsea 0 QPR 1

Robbie had away wins against Arsenal and Spurs....

Drop Torres, tell Rafa to f off and play me up front. I can hardly do any worse.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Here we see a fair example of why Michu cost £50m and Torres cost £2m.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
I think Torres should be dumped now, the last two home games he has done nothing at all. No desire at all from him. Ba and Lampard must start every game.

Re: Di Matteo sacked from Chelsea

Badge image
wow, chelsea have hit a wall, x2 unexpected home defeats in a row, im wondering if the Lampard situation has sent morale to rock bottom in the dressing room, what a situation to now be in for the chairman , ive never known anything like it before, i dont think there is going to be much good happening in the short term, there has been too many sudden changes in the past and now the sudden change of De Matteo and Lampard, if it was a factory and you were working there, you would be wondering what the hell is going on, and maybe looking for a job elsewhere, it wasnt so long ago Rafa slated the team for having no character and leaders, so it is pretty unbelievable that the door has been shown to Lampard..
